October Tour

On October 24 six cars and eleven members followed Ron Greene from Foxfire to his cabin near Roaring Rapids, NC….30 minutes north of Wilkesboro.  Beautiful day and the leaves were just starting to turn Fall colors.  The fast way would get us there in 2.5 hrs….took us 3:45 on some wonderful back roads that Ron plotted out.  Ron’s wife, Fonda, was waiting for us with snacks and drinks. She conducted house tours for the ladies…the guys headed for the huge back porch overlooking a babbling trout stream…pretty nice!

Ron fired up the grill and cooked burgers and brats.  The ladies had multiple sides and served more drinks. We just hung out and relaxed until about 3:00 then headed to the general store on Stoney Mountain for ice cream.

Then four cars headed about 1:45 northeast to Mount Airy….all planned by Leslie and Brian Yarbrough.  We stayed that evening at the Balladeer hotel.  Group dinner at a nice pub walking distance from the hotel. Very fun weekend!

2026 CMP Club Race

It was a beautiful Saturday at CMP, and some good Racing.  Even with the small field it was fun to watch. Of course, the best part for me personally is seeing so many OLD track friends…some going back 25 years!  My first Club Race at CMP was 2000!  We were living in Texas, but had built a home in Pinehurst.  I remember the grid in my race group had 50 cars!  Over 150 racers attended that event.  Times change.

Many thanks to Carolinas Region Club Racing teams over the years for many great events and wonderful memories!

Early Oct update…Oct 7

Great C&C in The Village this Sunday!  About 60 cars….eclectic mix!…from a 289 Cobra to a Ferrari Mondale 1985? to 991 Turbo S Martini graphics, etc.

Then on Monday morning at 4:45 a.m. off to VIR for two days of fun with the sixty drivers and 15 instructors! Terrific weather.  Great sponsors!  I had fun with my C8 ZO6 driver…he made great progress. All good until a Camaro put antifreeze down on track and caused two Porsches to hit a tire wall.  One driver went to hospital with a couple broken ribs.  He is recovering well….but.

A little break then we head down to CMP for Club Race weekend.

September activities in Sandhills Area 2026

The highlight this month was the Cars & Coffee at Sandhills Community College commemorating the anniversary of the passing of Judy Boles and the successful funding of a perpetual award in her name to the top female student in the Automotive Technologies program.  John Boles and George Hilliard told a few “Judy” stories the group of 38 members and guests.  Her days at the autocross track beating John’s time, at instructing her DE students at Watkins Glen…and having dinner with the Porsche family at Le Mans when she was PCA national president.  We miss that lady!

Sandhills Area visits Sandhills Community College September 19th

Thirty-eight members and guests turned out this morning at Sandhills Community College Sirotek Hall to remember the passing of Judy Boles, and to celebrate the funding of an endowment in her name.  An annual award of $2000 will be made to the top female student in SCC’s Automotive Technologies programs.

John Boles, Judy’s husband, and George Hillard, a long time family friend, spoke about their time together in grad school at UNC Chapel Hill.  At the time, John and Judy had a 356 SC and George was looking for one.  They found one for George and did the PPI together.  George also mentioned Judy passing him at high speed on a return trip to Chapel Hill from a college swim meet in Atlanta.

Next event is the monthly dinner meeting at Table On The Green Tuesday, Sep. 22.

We had 36 members and guests for dinner last night.  Calvin and Justin from Hendrick joined us and gave us the update on new ownership…and pledged their support to Sandhills members!  Nice to hear!

Cliff Cayer and wife Julie were our guest speakers.  Cliff owns Matrix MS at VIR and does track prep work for several local track/racer guys.  He gave us some insights on his Porsche journey from Oregon to to Pinehurst…amazing story!

Leslie Yarbrough, our MA, updated us on new members and anniversaries…and the FB page.  We appreciate all of her time and effort to keep members informed!

Terry Williams demonstrated the new Sandhills Area web page.  We have already attracted a couple new members via the web page!  Great work Terry!

Marisa and I updated members on upcoming events in September and October…very busy times!

Next meeting is October 27.

Sandhills C&C at Red’s Corner food truck event

We had about 80 enthusiasts gather on Sunday morning, Sep. 6 in Southern Pines with an eclectic display of cool cars!  About 10 Porsches highlighted the gathering….couple air cooled cars and most of the others were 992s.  Of course it was Labor Day weekend, so the crowd was decked out ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ.  Fun!

Next up is C&C at Sandhills Community College on Sep. 19.  We will be commemorating Judy Boles passing and the establishment of an annual memorial cash award to a female student in SCC Transportation Technologies program.

VIR IMSA event

Five Sandhills members visited VIR IMSA race on August 29.  A real spectacle in every sense!  Lots of Porsches in the mix too.  Paddock is so much fun…race cars, teams, tech stuff, famous personalities, etc.

Rexxy & Rosie are big Porsche favorites….especially with younger fans.  Lots of Rexxy toys and model cars.  Brian & Leslie Y. got up close with the Plaif Porsche team, and got a nice goodie bag of team hat, shirt, poster, stickers, etc.  Fun!
