Jekyll Island Adventure!

Sandhills Area members visited Jekyll Island and St. Marys,
Georgia in June. We had seven cars on the 4-day adventure to the Low Country and South Georgia coast. Back roads from Pinehurst…except the last 60 miles on 95…. Thanks to our Drive Coordinator, Bill Ainsley! We stayed at a Westin resort on the beach in Jekyll. The highlight there is the Georgia Sea Turtle and Reptile hospital and rehab center. But, the old historic Jekyll Island Inn was a fun visit too. And, the fabulous restaurants!

At the Sea Turtle facility there are nature exhibits, area history and culture, and observing hospital and turtle rehabilitation procedures. There are over 200 sea turtle nests on Jekyll, and many more on other barrier islands. Each female lays several hundred eggs, but only one in 300 lives to full adult reproductive maturity.

We took back roads through the low country to St. Marys, Ga.….about 1.5 hour drive. Great restaurant on the water for lunch, a few cool shops, and a submarine museum.  Kings Bay Trident Sub Navy base is close by

Sandhills get togethers for dinner meetings and C&C events are well attended. And, our last two drives after C&C have been fun! Drive and lunch at River Wild on Lake Tillery, and  Luna’s in Mount Gilead. Larry Lassiter joined us for lunch  in Mount Gilead. Larry was a founding member of Sandhills Area with me sixteen years ago!

Next, Marisa Williams and Leslie Yarbrough are planning a drive to the Greene’s mountain home for lunch and then on to explore Mt Airy and nearby state parks.

Also looking forward to the CMP Club Race events in October….cooler weather too!
